Whatever you do, please watch the talks by Hans Rosling at TED. First, the talk he gave in 2006. Then the talk he gave in 2007 (with a surprise ending!).
The tool he is built for this talk -- with his family-members is http://tools.google.com/gapminder/. My recommendation, play with it to compare India with other countries. [The software was later bought by Google.]
